31571: LSFH 37 Beinn Iobheir – SHIELING (Medieval to Post Medieval – 1266 AD to 1900 AD)

Summary:

SHIELING (Medieval to Post Medieval – 1266 AD to 1900 AD)
Sheiling

Location:

NB 28786 16541

Full description:

"Situated on the northern slopes of Beinn Lobheir looking over the northern shore of Loch Seaforth Head the fragmentary remains of this subcircular sheiling measures 5 x 5 metres and survives only as the fragmentary scatter of stones of the remains of a stone lining or toe of a turf built sheiling. There are no visible signs of an entrance or any internal features. The location of this sheiling, in close proximity to the remains of a pre-crofting settlement (25) might seem unusual, however, for long periods in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries this area was cleared of permanent settlement and as a result may well have been used as temporary or seasonal grazing lands." (Burgess 2004, 51)
