31551: LSFH 24.1 Loch na Muilne – FIELD BOUNDARY
Summary:
FIELD BOUNDARY (Early Prehistoric – 500000 BC to 4001 BC)
WALL (Early Prehistoric – 500000 BC to 4001 BC)
Neolithic stone wall
Location:
NB 27514 17426
Full description:
"Located at the most south-easterly tip of Loch na Muilne this fragmentary stone wall runs out from underneath the peat section on the east side of the tributary burn that issues into the loch at that point. Heading in a westerly direction it is visible for 10 metres before running into the west facing peat section on the opposite side of the burn. Its remains are fragmentary and measure 1 metre in width and stand no more than a single course of stones high." "This series of sub-peat walls can be seen along the eastern shore of Loch na Muilne. Their general location close to the bottom of the peat horizon or immediately above the glacial till suggests an early prehistoric (Neolithic) date, which is broadly supported by their form which is narrow fields (ca 2.5-3 metres wide) arranged radially across the landscape so that the walls are all broadly running down the slope."
