31330: Little Bernera, Lewis

Summary:

HOUSE? (Early Neolithic to Early Iron Age – 4000 BC to 401 BC)
CAIRN? (Undated)
Oval prehistoric building or possibly cairn

Location:

NB 14342 40573

Full description:

An oval building, very like a small version of the megalithic house/cairn at Steinacleit (smr no.xxxx). The insides of the walls are faced with orthostats, and the form, with a large central open area, walls c. 1.5m thick, and alcoves, suggests a domestic building rather than a cairn. If it is contemporary with its parallels in the Northern Isles, then this would be an early Neolithic building, but given the rarity of buildings of this type in the Western Isles, the dating must at best be tentative.
