108890: St Columba’s Chapel, Benbecula

St Columba’s Chapel, to the east of Balivanich, was founded by Saint Ternan or Torranan, after whom the isle of Taransay is said to have been named. He is believed to have been the first missionary to visit Benbecula, building this chapel dedicated to St Columba.

Amy MacRuairi was also involved with the site, said to have ‘built the parish church of St Columba on Benbecula’ in the late 14th century. The east end of the building dates from that time.

Now only stones remain. For more information, see the Canmore and Am Baile websites.
