87050: Marvig Group

Marvig Group

This photo shows a group from Marvig waiting at what was the traditional bus stop for Marvig people waiting for the bus to Stornoway. The bus stop was at the cross roads on the road to Calbost and saved the bus from going into the village. The location was at a gable end known as ‘Flask Shonnie Mairi‘ no doubt due to the shape of what was an unfinished gable end being so like a ‘flask’ This was the term used for a half bottle of whisky in these days. The photo clearly shows a well dressed group and some suitcases so some of the party must have been leaving the island. It is known that Angan was a whaler and Fido worked in a sugar factory so they may have been home on leave.
