109717: Battle of Largs

The Battle of Largs took place in the autumn of 1263. A fleet of ships sent by King Haakon IV of Norway to reinforce his claim to the Suðreyjar, Southern Isles, was moored in the Firth of Clyde when a storm developed, driving some of the vessels ashore near Largs.

On 2nd October Scotland’s army arrived, attacking the Norwegian sailors working to retrieve their vessels. Fighting on the shore was fierce and on nightfall both sides withdrew. It is generally agreed that there was no overall victor and that the result was indecisive.
