7644: 1 Balallan

1 Balallan was a new croft added to the village in c1849. It was given to the Ground Officer, for the parish, Mr Alexander Macleod, Valtos, as recompense for his duties. In 1869 it was added to the village as an ordinary croft and Neil Mackenzie moved from 63 Balallan as its first tenant. When Neil’s wife Sophie Macdonald died in 1885, the croft went to her niece Ann Macdonald, married to Duncan Morrison, 4 Arivruach.

On the night of 17 October 1887 at 3am, the house was found to be on fire. Duncan’s wife and family only just escaped with their lives. The house burnt to the ground.
