13 Ruisgarry (Sunhill)

The croft at 13 Ruisgarry was created in the 1850 relotting of Ruisgarry by the Harris Estate. The area it lies within is known as Sunhill (Gaelic: Cnoc na Grèine). It has been suggested that the name goes back to the days of sun-worship. The remains of a stone circle lie nearby.

In 1850 13 Ruisgarry was allotted to Chelsea pensioner Donald MacLeod. In 1854 he relocated and the croft was passed instead to another Donald MacLeod. In 1864 he lost the croft which passed to the Shaw family - Kenneth Shaw, Donald Shaw, then Donald John Shaw. On his death it passed to his wife Ann MacKillop, then her brother Angus MacKillop, and subsequently Johnnie MacAskill and his son Norman.
