John Macleod (1783-1869) from Vuia Mhor in Uig settled on this croft with his family. All of John’s ten brothers and sisters appear to have emigrated to Cape Breton in the 1820s, but it seems some of them spent some time in Balallan before leaving Lewis.

In the early 1850s, he swapped crofts with Donald Macleod (1812-1888) of 17 Balallan. Donald’s son John (1843-1927) who was a weaver, settled on the croft.
