56109: Caledonian Macbrayne

Caledonian Macbrayne serving the West Coast of Scotland is the largest operator of passenger vessels flying the Red Ensign and currently runs 28 ferries on the Clyde and the islands from Arran in the south to Lewis in the north.
The company began in 1851 – at that time the trading ships to the islands were run by the Burns Brothers of Glasgow – they transferred their Hebridean vessels to their chief clerk David Hutchison on the understanding that upon his retiral he would pass the fleet to their nephew David Macbrayne. This occurred in 1878 and the Macbrayne shipping line began.
