J & J Tod Ltd of Leith was a wholesale provision merchants owned by Gilbert Archer. After the Great War, James Macdonald of Habost was a commercial traveller for the firm, which later opened premises at 10 Francis Street, Stornoway (subsequently occupied by the Stornoway Gazette). with James Macdonald as manager. For decades they supplied the village and mobile shops in Lewis and Harris.

Gilbert Archer and James Macdonald became partners in the tweed business, James Macdonald Ltd.
