120887: Commercial Hotel, Stornoway
The Sail Loft and former Commercial Hotel in Stornoway are rare, surviving remnants of an era when fishing and the herring industry was the economic foundation of the Western Isles. They are very significant buildings, whose classical simplicity alludes to a time of great civic pride and prosperity. Finding a sustainable use for the buildings was a major challenge for the Trust and LDN but the eventual solution involved their restoration and conversion to residential use. Three elegant and partially open plan townhouses have been created in the Sail Loft and a further four apartments were accommodated in the former Commercial Hotel.
