Bernera School

Bernera School

Bernera School, in the village of Breaclete, was officially opened on the 14th July 1881 by School Board; Mssrs Gillies, Macarthur and Macleod.

Until 1963 the pupils were all living in Bernera, and the children in Tir Mor had their own school. Since then all the children in both Bernera and Tir Mor have been taught in the school in Breaclete. The first headmaster was William Milne and there have been 24 headteachers since.
The fabric of the building has been improved and the amenities increased over the years. All children now go to Stornoway at the age of twelve to continue their education there.

The school is presently divided into an English and a Gaelic speaking unit.
