22018: Balallan School, Balallan
In 1872 the Education (Scotland) Act vested complete responsibility for education with the Government but it took some time to build schools in Kinloch. Balallan School was opened on 26 May 1879 when 23 pupils were enrolled, their ages ranging from 7 years to 22 years. Of the 23 pupils enrolled on the first day, 12 had previously attended the Gaelic School.
Including the 23 listed above, a total of 146 pupils were enrolled during 1879. In 1979, the Centenary year of the school, 11 pupils were enrolled, making a total roll of 52 pupils from a catchment area including Balallan, Airidhbhruaich, Shieldenish, Seaforth Head and Eishken. Two of the pupils enrolled in 1979 are directly descended from one of the pupils enrolled on the Opening Day in 1879.
