120579: HMS/SS Arawa (124461)

The SS Arawa was a Cargo Steamship built by Swan Hunter & Wigham, Wallsend in  1907 for the Shaw Savill Albion Co Ltd, London. She was requisitioned by the Admiralty in 1914, served in the First World War as a troopship. The SS Arawa was returned to her owners in 1921, sold twice and renamed SS Konigstein and SS Gandia.

On January 22, 1942 the SS Gandia was torpedoed and sunk with the loss of 64 lives.
