120470: SS/HMS Cathay 148843

The SS Cathay was a Passenger Ship built by Barclay Curle & Co, Glasgow in 1924 for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co, London.

She was requisitioned by the Admiralty on August 25, 1939 and converted to an Armed Merchant Cruiser in Bombay.

On February 5, 1942 the HMS Cathay was returned to P & O and converted into a Troopship. On Passage from Algiers to Bougie the ship was bombed and sunk with the loss of one life.
