119782: SS California (147871)

The SS California was a British Steam Turbine Ocean Liner built by Alexander Stephen & Sons, Glasgow in 1923 for the Anchor Line. 

She carried passengers from Glasgow to New York via Londonderry and Boston.

SS California was requisitioned by the Admiralty in 1939 and was converted to an Armed Cruiser. From 1942 she was a Troopship.

On July 8, 1943 the SS California was travelling in Convoy and was attacked by three enemy aircraft. The attack left the ship in flames and  she was abandoned.
