HMS Newmarket was a 833 ton steamer built in 1907 by Earle’s Shipbuilding & Engineering Company, Hull for the Great Eastern Railway Company, Harwich. She was requisitioned by the Royal Navy for use as a minesweeper in October 1914.
The Newmarket’s loss did not come while minesweeping. On July 17, 1917, the German submarine UC 38 torpedoed and sank her south of Nikaria Island in the Aegean Sea.
